What is Pilates?

Pilates is exercise to return you to life! It is a movement system developed by German exercise enthusiast Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. The method is performed on both mats and specialized spring loaded equipment. Mr Pilates’ intent was to retrain and revitalize sluggish and slouching bodies through movement, with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life. It’s hard to function at your prime at work, at play, in your community and with your family if your body is out of whack!

Whether you want to strengthen your core, develop healthy muscle tone, improve your posture and alignment, advance in your particular sport, overcome an injury, have more energy, or just move with confidence- Pilates can help you accomplish all of this and realize many other benefits!

“Physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.” ~ Joe Pilates

Mr Pilates believed that physical fitness- the freedom in your body to do what you want to do in life- was the “first requisite to happiness.” Rather than fitness being a means to achieve a certain type of body or mere aesthetics, he saw physical vitality as a foundation upon which one could flourish in intellectual, charitable, relational and spiritual pursuits.

“I’m not concerned with body building; I’m just trying to make people normal human beings.” ~ Joe Pilates
